Lot of stuff here!

As to whether you get a new place when your partner has lived there with an ex, I would think it depends. In this economy and housing market, it’s not necessarily that easy to move, especially if the partner owns or is under rent control. Does it look the way the ex left it, with a style that is definitely not you? Has it returned to a bachelor pad state, or one that reflects your partner’s taste? I don’t know that I would want to live somewhere that is too much the taste of any one individual, whether it’s the ex or the partner, but if it’s possible to make it your own without forcing him to move too, then that would probably be my preference.

How it comes up? I think it evolves naturally, assuming that both partners feel the same way about the relationship, and they feel the same way about living together. I know some like to push the issue, in terms of testing the commitment, but you don’t want to do it before you’re ready, as it is a big step.
